The Plan I Master's program follows a conventional research thesis-based MS degree path. Students must complete 49 units of graduate and upper-division courses (limited to the 100 and 200 series) along with a thesis. A minimum of 27 units out of the 49 must come from VEN 299 research credits. The Viticulture and Enology Graduate Group provides advanced coursework covering grapevine genetics, physiology, and biochemistry, wine chemistry, microbiology, sensory science, and winemaking engineering. Research areas are diverse, spanning grapevine molecular biology, microbial studies, fermentation chemistry, and analytical-sensory relationships. While this program exclusively offers an M.S. degree, students can pursue Ph.D. studies through affiliated graduate groups such as agricultural and environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, food science, genetics, microbiology, plant biology, or soils and biogeochemistry.
Consideration for program admission requires a bachelor’s degree. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
