The Master of Science in Statistics program combines theoretical and practical coursework, a comprehensive examination, and statistical consulting experience. Students develop expertise in mathematical statistics, probability theory, computational methods, applied statistics, data analysis techniques, and statistical research methodologies. Graduates acquire both qualitative and quantitative competencies essential for careers in statistical research, consulting, and academic instruction. Each student's curriculum is customized and approved by a Graduate Advisor in collaboration with the student. This non-thesis program follows M.S. Plan II guidelines, requiring a minimum of 44 units (with at least 18 at the graduate level per university policy). Candidates must pass a comprehensive final examination in their major field, which serves as the program's capstone experience without requiring a thesis.
An undergraduate major in mathematics or statistics is typical for statistics graduate students, but is not required. However, because of the mathematical nature of some of the graduate coursework, students should be able to demonstrate good mathematical ability.
