This cross-disciplinary graduate program equips students with expertise to design, coordinate, and oversee initiatives that improve agricultural progress, natural resource stewardship, and rural communities, especially in developing nations and less-industrialized areas globally. The curriculum combines comprehensive foundational studies with specialized focus areas. Core coursework explores global development challenges concerning agriculture and ecosystems, covering development theory and history, leadership strategies, principles of crop and livestock production systems, and agricultural economics. Students then pursue in-depth study through their chosen specialization, selecting from diverse fields such as agricultural economics, biological systems engineering, crop science, animal husbandry, cultural anthropology, fisheries science, poultry studies, community planning, ecosystem science, economic theory, insect science, landscape architecture, environmental health, food technology, gender studies, human geography, plant cultivation, dietary science, plant health, botany, integrated pest management, political theory, fruit science, veterinary public health, rangeland ecology, social systems, pedology, regenerative agriculture, vegetable production, grape cultivation, and hydrology. Alongside the Master of Science degree, participants can earn a Development Practice Certificate, open to all UC Davis graduate students, featuring studies in global development, sustainable energy solutions, business innovation, nutritional science, and hands-on development fieldwork.
