Criminal defense attorneys are the pinnacle of trial advocacy. Among legal professionals, they routinely handle critical matters involving public safety, individual freedoms, and constitutional protections. For aspiring criminal law practitioners, UC Davis School of Law provides exceptional resources to develop the skills and hands-on experience required for this demanding profession. During their initial semester, law students take Criminal Law, which covers the fundamental principles of criminal offenses. Following the first year, they enroll in Evidence, Criminal Procedure, and typically Trial Practice. The curriculum also includes specialized courses covering areas like corporate crime, youth justice, criminal justice system management, and related topics. Beyond coursework, students enjoy numerous experiential learning opportunities.
Completing externships in judicial processes or criminal justice systems is crucial for future criminal attorneys, and King Hall's robust externship programs provide exceptional access to work alongside judges, district attorneys, and defense counsel. Many students acquire practical skills by representing clients through the law school's acclaimed clinical programs, while also broadening their perspective by joining student groups like the Criminal Law Association, Students Against Mass Incarceration, the Trial Practice Honors Board, Moot Court Board, UC Davis Law Review, and Social Justice Law Review.
