The Geography Graduate Program offers a solid foundation in geographic principles, theories, methodologies, and traditions, with advanced coursework options across four primary focus areas: environmental sciences, analytical techniques and GIS, human-environment relations, and cultural-regional studies. The curriculum highlights spatial relationships between human societies and natural systems, covering topics like landscape transformation, sustainable resource use, global environmental patterns, plant/animal domestication and distribution, biogeography and climatic shifts, cultural adaptation of native and migrant populations, traditional agricultural systems, gender roles in development, and health-nutrition geography. Master's candidates gain expertise in both a thematic and regional concentration along with GIS proficiency, while doctoral students hone advanced abilities in data collection, interpretation, and knowledge integration.
For students entering the graduate program without an undergraduate degree in geography, it will be necessary to evaluate prior coursework and most likely take additional preparatory coursework in geography. The minimal background for entrance into the master's program is a bachelor's degree with 3.0 in upper-division coursework taken during the applicant’s last two years as an undergraduate or other evidence of comparable scholarship.
