The Department of Communications' M.A. program offers both thesis and non-thesis pathways. Students selecting the THESIS PATH must finish 32 course units while conducting original research that results in a thesis. Those choosing the NON-THESIS PATH complete 40 course units and must successfully pass a comprehensive exam with both written and oral sections. Many master's candidates pursue their M.A. as part of their journey toward a Ph.D., even if initially only seeking a master's degree at UC Davis. This program emphasizes the scientific examination of human communication through quantitative methods, particularly focusing on digital society and mediated communication. Participants develop expertise in analyzing how individuals generate, share, understand, assess, and react to messages across various contexts - from interpersonal exchanges to organizational, public, and cross-cultural communication. Graduates acquire both qualitative and quantitative research competencies essential for academic careers and professional work involving strategic communication, media studies, and theory development. The curriculum equips students for diverse opportunities in academia, research institutions, corporate environments, and public sector roles.
