The Master of Arts in Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) is a two-year interdisciplinary program that prepares students to care for and manage collections of film, video, digital media, and new media works. This program equips aspiring archivists and collection specialists with a global perspective on the principles, techniques, and real-world applications of moving image preservation. The coursework covers film and media conservation, collection stewardship, metadata systems, legal and copyright considerations, curatorial practices, institutional cultures, and the evolution of cinema and broadcasting. Instruction comes from renowned experts and working professionals.
Located in New York City, MIAP leverages its urban environment to connect students with archives, cultural institutions, laboratories, and arts organizations through hands-on internships. These placements expose students to varied institutional philosophies and preservation methodologies. Program alumni pursue careers as preservation experts, archival professionals, researchers, and conservators across diverse settings including national archives, museum collections, media production companies, broadcasting facilities, digital repositories, and arts nonprofits.
