The program provides education in plant pathology, covering diseases triggered by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes. Graduate students can focus on areas such as the physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology of plant pathogens or host-pathogen relationships, the biology and ecology of pathogens, disease epidemiology and modeling, as well as plant disease diagnosis and management through chemical, biological, and integrated control approaches.
The Biotechnology specialization offers a robust interdisciplinary curriculum, incorporating bioethics, business, and legal considerations in biotechnology, along with a 3-6 month internship at a biotech firm or research facility in another academic institution or national lab. Dr. Kjelstrom, the Program Coordinator, helps students secure internships, craft compelling cover letters and resumes, and build professional skills relevant to the corporate world.
