The UC Davis Philosophy Department runs an intimate, collaborative graduate program with an analytical focus. Faculty expertise spans diverse fields such as metaphysics, formal epistemology, philosophy of language, mind, science (particularly biology and physics), mathematics, normative ethics, metaethics, political philosophy, history of analytic thought, and ancient philosophy. Notably, the department champions diversity, with five of its thirteen full-time faculty being women. The program offers both M.A. and Ph.D. options. Prospective Ph.D. candidates should apply directly to that track, regardless of prior M.A. status, as doctoral students can earn their master's en route. The M.A. track serves those not pursuing a doctorate or seeking foundational graduate study, though students may subsequently transition to the Ph.D. program if desired.
Admission to the doctoral degree program or the Ph.D. track in Philosophy requires a Bachelor’s degree in any area from an accredited college or university. Students who already have a Master’s Degree in Philosophy or some other area may be admitted, as may students with a doctoral degree in an area other than philosophy.
