The Nursing Science and Health-Care Leadership Doctor of Philosophy program seeks students passionate about driving healthcare transformation through nursing education and research. This program is designed for those aiming to address critical public health challenges by enhancing healthcare delivery and system improvements. Graduates from the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing emerge as strong contenders for leadership roles, leveraging scientific methods, innovative thinking, collaborative skills, and a dedication to making healthcare more efficient, empathetic, and widely available. This full-time academic Ph.D. program develops future leaders in healthcare, policy, and academia, equipping them to: pioneer groundbreaking research, train future healthcare professionals and researchers, drive systemic improvements, shape and enact policies, and promote health across diverse environments. Doctoral candidates complete core and elective coursework along with a dissertation, typically finishing the four-year program through continuous full-time study. Core classes are held during fall, winter, and spring quarters (excluding summer) at UC Davis's Sacramento campus, with sessions primarily scheduled on Thursdays and Fridays in hybrid formats. Elective options differ for each student and are available at both Sacramento and Davis campuses.
Participants in this doctoral program collaborate extensively with faculty advisors to tailor their studies through cognates, methodology courses, and electives that align with their research and educational objectives. Cognates represent interdisciplinary coursework beyond the core curriculum, carefully selected to complement dissertation work and individual learning requirements. Through strategic selection of cognates, specialized methods courses, and relevant electives, students can customize their academic journey to match their professional aspirations.
