Numerous students across U.S. schools a) struggle with math evaluations, b) believe their grasp of mathematical concepts is insufficient, and c) have an aversion to math classes. As researchers in mathematics education, we aim to tackle these issues through design research, investigating innovative learning approaches that make math both appealing and confidence-building. We meticulously analyze student thought processes within these settings to comprehend how instructional tools, teamwork, and dialogue facilitate learning. Additionally, we collaborate with educators to transform their teaching methodologies and adopt fresh instructional strategies, with particular emphasis on improving math education in disadvantaged communities.
The Mathematics Education PhD program concentrates on revolutionizing math curricula, developing and assessing effective teaching methods, understanding mathematical learning processes, examining classroom culture and practices, exploring teachers' viewpoints and professional growth, and studying technology's role in mathematics instruction.
