The Graduate Program in Biological Systems Engineering focuses on strengthening teaching and research capabilities while preparing the next wave of experts to tackle issues in the sustainable creation, handling, and utilization of biological resources. Participants develop expertise in applying engineering principles to optimize the production, distribution, and processing of biological goods—including food, animal feed, and textiles—while protecting natural ecosystems, maintaining environmental standards, and safeguarding public welfare. UC Davis's College of Engineering provides distinctive educational experiences through its Biological and Systems Engineering graduate program, helping students reach their highest capabilities. Our program's core goals include advancing instructional and investigative work in biological systems engineering, while equipping emerging professionals to manage the responsible cultivation, stewardship, and application of biological substances.

The Engineering Doctorate program concentrates on design principles, analytical methods, economic factors, administrative skills, and workforce considerations. This curriculum supports students in developing into practicing engineers. While maintaining academic rigor comparable to a Ph.D. track, the program prioritizes professional engineering practice over research activities. Candidates undergo a Qualifying Examination covering a primary discipline and supplementary areas, typically encompassing a broader academic scope than the specialized focus of Ph.D. studies. Accordingly, Engineering Doctorate students explore their field with less depth than Ph.D. candidates but greater interdisciplinary breadth. Supplementary studies often incorporate non-engineering disciplines like life sciences, organizational leadership, economic theory, social sciences, and related fields. Most students complete the program within a five-year timeframe.

Qualification Requirements

Highly qualified students with or without a BS or MS degree in engineering may apply. However, students with a non-engineering BS degree need to meet additional prerequisites for admission and should make up deficiencies in engineering core and upper division courses. Applicants will have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or a graduate GPA of 3.25. Under some exceptional circumstances, students who only hold an undergraduate degree with a GPA below 3.0 may be conditionally admitted with a coursework only option for the purposes of demonstrating the ability to maintain a qualifying GPA at the graduate level prior to full admission.
