Mathematics extends far beyond basic calculations and formulas; it explores abstract patterns, spatial relationships, transformations, and how these fundamental ideas interconnect. As a discipline, mathematics offers uniquely precise definitions for every symbol, enabling exact descriptions of scientific phenomena and processes. Professionals in this field tackle critical challenges across science and society, creating bridges between disciplines while examining problems in their most abstract, theoretical states. UC Davis mathematics alumni pursue diverse paths including operations research, systems analysis, computer science, actuarial sciences, insurance, finance, and education. Many continue their studies in graduate programs for mathematics, law, engineering, or economics.
Earning a mathematics degree opens doors to numerous industrial careers beyond teaching. Opportunities abound in operations research, data analytics, systems design, computing, actuarial sciences, insurance, and financial services, among others. The mathematical foundation also serves as excellent preparation for advanced studies in various domains including legal studies, engineering disciplines, and economic theory.
