Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary area that merges engineering principles with biomedical sciences, offering a broad spectrum of specializations from medical imaging to regenerative medicine. Key innovations from this field include the left ventricular assist device (LVAD), artificial joints, hemodialysis, bioengineered skin, coronary stents, computed tomography (CT), and flexible endoscopes. Students pursuing biomedical engineering are driven by a desire to enhance human health and quality of life, though they typically do not engage directly with patients like physicians do. Because it requires extra coursework beyond the BME degree, this major is not a primary path for pre-medical studies. The BS program in the Department of Biomedical Engineering aims to blend outstanding teaching with cutting-edge research to develop technologies and computational methods that address medical and societal needs.
The biomedical engineering curriculum is structured to build a strong interdisciplinary base in life and physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering, while offering flexibility in upper-level courses to let students delve into specific areas of interest. Our educational approach focuses on imparting knowledge of current topics at the leading edge of biomedical engineering research. Graduates can find career opportunities in industries, hospitals, academic research and teaching institutions, national labs, government regulatory bodies, consulting, and finance.
