International relations is a multidisciplinary field addressing contemporary global challenges and their possible resolutions. Students can specialize in areas like international commerce and growth, conflict resolution and safety, ecological concerns, public health and resource management, or cultural and ethnic studies. The program offers access to classes across more than 40 academic departments, providing a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing different societies while equipping learners with competencies for success in our interconnected world. Following foundational coursework in social sciences and foreign languages, students select a concentration for upper-division studies, with options including global economics, conflict prevention, environmental sustainability, health and resource allocation, or cultural dynamics. Specialization involves focusing on a specific geographic area: Western Europe, Russia and Eastern/Central Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin/South America, or Africa and the Middle East. Participants can also utilize UC Davis' robust study abroad offerings through the Education Abroad Center for immersive international experiences.
A notable opportunity for international relations students is the Education Abroad Program, offering deep cultural immersion in foreign nations. UC Davis supports career development through its Internship and Career Center, facilitating placements in government, legal, and corporate sectors. The university's Washington Center and Sacramento programs organize internships and academic courses in these capital cities, presenting valuable prospects for majors (see UC Washington Center [UCDC]). Graduates pursue careers in governmental bodies (including diplomatic services), state institutions, global NGOs (like the UN), philanthropic organizations, and multinational corporations. The program's rigorous language component significantly boosts employment opportunities in roles requiring foreign language proficiency and cultural understanding.
