Chicana/o studies is a global, interdisciplinary program encompassing research, education, and community engagement, enabling students to explore the cultural expressions, social dynamics, and lived realities of Chicano/Latino populations. The program's theoretical foundations and analytical approaches also facilitate comparative studies with diverse groups worldwide. Following introductory coursework, majors select between two concentrations: Cultural Studies, which examines artistic and literary traditions, or Social/Policy Studies, focusing on societal structures, research methodologies, and community health. Proficiency in Spanish—reading, writing, and speaking—is essential for advanced scholarship and professional engagement with Chicanx and Latinx communities.
The Chicana/Chicano Studies Department delivers an interdisciplinary program investigating Chicana/Chicano/Chicanx identities through lenses of class, race, gender, sexuality, and cultural production. Students can pursue either a Bachelor of Arts major or a minor fulfilling College of Letters and Science requirements, both examining Chicanx histories and contemporary realities across the Americas. This degree cultivates versatile intellectual skills applicable to careers in multicultural education, arts institutions, urban planning, policy analysis, and social services. The program's interdisciplinary nature also prepares graduates for advanced study across numerous academic disciplines.
