Anthropology investigates this subject through diverse methods. Majors analyze similarities and differences between humans and other creatures (typically primates) to identify shared traits and distinctive characteristics. They delve into ancient civilizations via archaeology, uncovering how societies functioned millennia ago and what they valued. Additionally, they research human biology, genetics, and our species' ability to thrive in various settings. Anthropologists explore global cultures, examining how different communities interpret their surroundings through unique legal systems, spiritual beliefs, and artistic expressions. Fundamentally, anthropology offers a comprehensive perspective on what it means to be human.
When pursuing an anthropology degree, you'll select from three specialized paths: 1) The Bachelor of Science curriculum, which emphasizes natural sciences with concentration on human evolution and biological anthropology while preparing students for healthcare careers, or the Bachelor of Arts program with options focusing on either 2) evolutionary anthropology (human biology, ecology, and social structures) or 3) cultural anthropology (including ethnographic studies and language analysis). Those interested in archaeology will work with advisors to select the most suitable academic path. Both degree options begin with foundational anthropology and social science coursework before allowing significant flexibility in choosing specialized classes aligned with individual interests.
Freshman applicant will be completing or have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
