The American studies program employs multiple perspectives to examine the complex, multifaceted lives of individuals across the United States and globally. This interdisciplinary field draws from diverse academic areas—including history, literature, environmental science, food studies, and sociology—to investigate American culture. Offering a comprehensive liberal arts foundation, the program enables students to focus on key social and cultural themes central to American Studies. By taking advanced courses in at least two additional departments, students can customize their studies to align with personal academic objectives. Potential focus areas range from Youth Education and Social Justice to Popular Culture, Comparative Racial Studies, Environmental Studies, Military Systems, Gender Studies, Health Disparities, and Food Culture. The curriculum offers flexibility for seniors to pursue either a thesis or creative final project, promotes international study opportunities, and supports career exploration through internships—all potentially counting toward degree requirements with advisor approval.
