The MTM initiative represents a joint effort between UC Berkeley's Department of Bioengineering and UCSF's Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences. Participants gain dual enrollment status, accessing the combined knowledge base and advanced facilities of both prestigious institutions. Beyond these primary departments, students also benefit from leadership development opportunities provided by UC Berkeley's Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership.
This curriculum prepares participants to utilize translational research methods and engineering principles for tackling critical healthcare challenges. The emphasis lies on developing creative, cross-disciplinary solutions to practical medical issues through collaborative teamwork.
Engineers, researchers, and medical professionals aiming to advance novel therapies and medical technologies will find this program particularly valuable. We welcome applicants from diverse healthcare backgrounds including medicine, nursing, dental science, and pharmaceutical studies. Graduates typically pursue careers in healthcare product development or patient services after completing their master's degree or additional specialized training.
The following minimum requirements apply to all graduate programs and will be verified by the Graduate Division:
Applicants who already hold a master's degree in bioengineering (or a similar field) will need to carefully specify their reasons for pursuing this additional masters; duplicate degrees are not allowed.
Please note: Applicants who intend to pursue additional degrees beyond the MTM program should be prepared to explain their intended educational trajectory.
