The program teaches students about ethical challenges affecting worldwide healthcare. It equips them for professional roles as bioethics specialists in hospitals, medical education settings, and healthcare organizations, as advisors on public policy matters, or as bioethics researchers. The 32-credit Master's in Bioethics can be earned alongside an MD degree within five years. Students complete MD coursework during the initial three years, then focus full-time on MA studies in the fourth year. As medical science progresses, new diagnostic and treatment technologies have introduced significant ethical dilemmas. The combined MD/MA bioethics program examines moral considerations surrounding scientific and medical developments like the Human Genome Initiative, reproductive cloning, stem cell studies, organ donation procedures, and palliative care decisions. All participants complete two foundational courses: Advanced Bioethics Principles and Advanced Environmental Ethics. Students then customize their curriculum by selecting classes across NYU's graduate divisions, including the College of Global Public Health, Graduate School of Arts and Science, Silver School of Social Work, School of Law, and Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
