Berkeley Social Welfare trains students to become leaders in social welfare and social work. For nearly 80 years since 1944, we've graduated more than 11,000 social work practitioners and academics who now hold leadership positions in research, education, advanced practice, and administration. Our graduate programs include the professional Master of Social Welfare (MSW) and the academic Doctor of Philosophy in Social Welfare (PhD). The Berkeley MSW is an intensive two-year, full-time program where all students complete a structured curriculum of at least 12 units per semester, equipping them for both broad and specialized practice.
