The Department of Bioengineering provides a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Bioengineering, a PhD in Bioengineering, and a Master of Translational Medicine (MTM). The PhD and MTM programs are collaborative efforts with UC San Francisco, with degrees awarded jointly by UCSF and UC Berkeley. The one-year Master of Engineering program focuses on engineering and entrepreneurship, preparing students for immediate entry into industry careers. Bioengineering, also called Biomedical Engineering, utilizes engineering methods to address complex biological challenges, ranging from prosthetic development and medical equipment to molecular and cellular engineering.

The following are the minimum admissions requirements as outlined by the UC Berkeley Graduate Division: “(1) a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; (2) a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and (3) enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field. Satisfying minimal standards, however, does not guarantee your admission, since the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of places available.
TOEFL at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT), and 570 for the paper-based format (PBT); Overall Band score must be at least 7 on a 9-point scale for IELTS
