The Scandinavian graduate program prepares students to become scholars, educators, translators, and research professionals specializing in Nordic languages, literature, and cultural studies.
The department excels in contemporary Scandinavian literatures (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish), medieval Norse studies, film and visual culture, as well as interdisciplinary explorations of Northern intellectual and cultural heritage. Students are encouraged to adopt comparative approaches across Nordic countries while building expertise in one primary language and literary tradition. The curriculum actively supports interdisciplinary research across all historical periods. Note: The Department of Scandinavian only accepts applicants pursuing the combined M.A./Ph.D. track - standalone M.A. candidates are not admitted. Those holding equivalent Scandinavian M.A. degrees from other institutions may apply directly to UCB's Ph.D. program and request exemption from repeating master's-level coursework.
The minimum graduate admissions requirements are:
three letters of recommendation
