The Folklore Program at UC Berkeley cultivates visionary scholars in folkloristics for the modern era. Our program offers rigorous, critical engagement with folklore studies spanning from the 1600s to today. Students are encouraged to specialize in a specific area of folkloristics while simultaneously building expertise in complementary fields. We recommend graduate students pursue interdisciplinary connections with areas like ethnic studies, performance theory, science and technology studies, narrative analysis, ethnomusicology, material culture, or gender and queer studies to enrich their folklore research.
