The Department of Classics provides Master's and Doctoral programs in Classical Archaeology, focusing on the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Applicants enter the PhD track directly, with bachelor's degree holders starting in the MA program and some qualified master's candidates proceeding straight to doctoral studies. MA students who fulfill requirements may then transition to the PhD program.
Classical Archaeology at our institution embraces interdisciplinary approaches, blending humanities and social sciences perspectives. The curriculum offers comprehensive training in Greek and Roman archaeology while supporting specialized study areas. Participation in Mediterranean fieldwork (often with UC Berkeley-led projects) is mandatory, and students have exceptional access to campus collections of artifacts, inscriptions, and papyri. PhD candidates specialize in either Greek or Roman archaeology, with tailored requirements for fieldwork, coursework, and language proficiency based on their chosen focus.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
