The department provides an accredited professional Master of Architecture (MArch), along with post-professional Master of Advanced Architectural Design (MAAD), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. Architects deliver expertise across the full spectrum of the building lifecycle—from initial concepts to design visualization, craftsmanship and construction, as well as evaluating both physical and digital environments. Embedded within the College of Environmental Design, Berkeley's Department of Architecture was established on foundational values of cross-disciplinary teamwork and a commitment to innovative exploration. Its undergraduate curriculum spans design principles and theory, architectural and urban history, sustainable building technologies, structural engineering, sociocultural influences, global environmental design, digital modeling, urban planning, and visual arts.
The Master of Architecture curriculum equips students pursuing their initial professional accreditation with a thorough and demanding education for architectural practice. Graduate candidates can tailor their journey through this two-to-three-year intensive program based on prior academic and professional background. The department welcomes applicants from all undergraduate disciplines. Program duration, required course units, and specific coursework may differ depending on the applicant's academic history, work experience, and any prior graduate studies. The Master of Architecture Committee determines individual placement after reviewing each application.
