In exceptional cases, a select group of applicants may be admitted to pursue a one-year Master of Science (SM) degree. This non-professional program is designed for experienced practitioners in urban planning or related disciplines who demonstrate: a well-defined plan for their MIT coursework, a specific thesis topic, and a commitment from a DUSP faculty advisor. The faculty member must agree to mentor the candidate during their time at MIT and provide a recommendation letter confirming this arrangement. Applicants must establish this advisory relationship before applying. To earn the SM degree, students must complete at least 66 subject units, submit an approved thesis proposal by the fall semester's end, and finish their thesis by spring semester's conclusion. Unlike the MCP program, SM candidates are exempt from core course requirements.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
The minimum score required for the IELTS is 7 and the minimum TOEFL score is 600 (250 for computer-based test, 100 for Internet-based test). While either test score is accepted, the IELTS score is preferred.
