This field focuses on creating theoretical and experimental approaches to examine nuclear material management throughout its entire lifecycle. The developed techniques and frameworks assess environmental effects, cost-efficiency, and proliferation risks of fuel cycles while aiding in system optimization. Fundamental studies involve establishing deterministic models with supporting experimental data, probabilistic methodologies, and optimization techniques. Primary attention is given to the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative, which seeks to enhance repository efficiency for spent nuclear fuel from light-water reactors through advanced separation and transmutation systems for challenging radioactive elements.
