The Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning provides a professional graduate program leading to a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) degree, along with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. The PhD program focuses on in-depth scholarly investigation within landscape architecture and environmental planning, demanding innovative research that expands theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and subject expertise. This curriculum specifically prioritizes research employing social and ecological scientific approaches to analyze the intricate decision-making processes involved in landscape modification and their environmental impacts at both regional and worldwide scales. The Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning PhD prepares graduates for academic positions, research-oriented careers, and executive roles in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and professional consulting firms.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
