The Graduate Group in Epidemiology is a cross-disciplinary program featuring faculty from various UC Berkeley departments and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Participants earn either an MS or PhD in Epidemiology through Berkeley's Graduate Division. This academic unit operates under the Graduate Council's oversight and is administratively housed within the School of Public Health's Division of Epidemiology.
The program unites faculty expertise spanning epidemiology, biostatistics, economics, demography, sociology, anthropology, behavioral sciences, molecular biology, genetics, vector biology, and other health-related disciplines. Students gain rigorous training in epidemiological and biostatistical methodologies while selecting a third specialization area. PhD candidates typically concentrate their dissertation research on uncovering new insights about factors affecting health patterns or specific disease prevalence across populations.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
