The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences provides a doctoral program in Earth and Planetary Science, focusing on fostering innovative thought and cultivating skills for autonomous, groundbreaking research. An undergraduate foundation in physical sciences is particularly advantageous, with many graduate students coming from backgrounds in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, or astronomy. Students enter directly into the Earth and Planetary Science PhD track, typically pursuing their doctorate without intermediate steps.
While the department does have a one-year Master's program, enrollment is restricted exclusively to alumni of our undergraduate Earth and Planetary Science degree. External applicants from different disciplines or institutions cannot apply for the MA program.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
