The interdisciplinary Folklore Program at UC Berkeley prepares future thought leaders in folkloristics for modern times. Our program delivers a thorough, analytical, and theory-based education in global folklore studies. Scholars cultivate specialized knowledge in folkloristics, integrating diverse methodological approaches and cultural contexts. We promote cross-disciplinary exploration, encouraging students to complement their folklore studies with expertise in areas like ethnic studies, data analytics, environmental science, legal frameworks, performance arts, narrative analysis, musical anthropology, material culture, or gender theory, enriching their folklore research. The program features two pathways: a two-year Master's degree culminating in a thesis, and a Designated Emphasis track. "Doctoral candidates in Berkeley's humanities or social sciences programs may pursue the Designated Emphasis in Folklore, gaining comprehensive training in the discipline. Successful candidates will earn recognition on their diploma as "Ph.D. in [major] with Designated Emphasis in Folklore." Admission requires current enrollment in a Berkeley Ph.D. program (Master's candidates and external students are ineligible). While early application (by the third semester) is recommended, submissions are accepted anytime before qualifying exams.
