The Theatre Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provides both graduate and undergraduate degree options (BFA, MA, PhD) for students pursuing theatre as a liberal arts discipline. Our curriculum emphasizes theatre history, dramaturgy, and the evolution of dramatic criticism across different eras and cultures, with a special focus on American theatre. Founded under Barnard Hewitt's leadership, the program has awarded over 150 degrees and collaborates with faculty from diverse departments including English, Classics, New Media, and Medieval Studies. Students gain a sophisticated perspective on theatre's historical, literary, and theoretical dimensions within broader societal frameworks. The University Library boasts one of the nation's most comprehensive collections for theatre research. Specialize in various dramatic traditions: Ancient Greek, Early American, Early Modern, Eastern European, German Theatre, Medieval Drama, Multimedia Music Theatre, and Opera. Teaching opportunities are available in foundational courses like Introduction to Theatre, Dramatic Analysis, Modern Drama, and Theatre History.
