The UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning strives to enhance fairness, economic vitality, and ecological health across neighborhoods, communities, and urban areas by generating knowledge and fostering involvement through education, research, and public service. Our goal is to develop sustainable, cost-effective, and inclusive urban spaces, infrastructure, and community services that enrich quality of life for everyone.
Berkeley's City Planning PhD program equips students with expertise in urban theory, cutting-edge research methods, and practical planning applications. Launched in 1968, the program has awarded over 170 doctoral degrees, with graduates achieving prominence as educators, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners worldwide. Currently supported by approximately 20 faculty members specializing in diverse areas like transportation systems, urban design, environmental planning, and global urbanization, the program maintains strong connections with various research institutions. Students are encouraged to focus their studies within urban planning while exploring interdisciplinary opportunities in architecture, engineering, social sciences, and public health.
