The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures provides a doctoral program specializing in Chinese Language. Admission is exclusively for PhD candidates.

Typically, applicants should possess an undergraduate background equivalent to this department's major. Those without BA or MA degrees in East Asian Languages and Cultures, Chinese, or related fields may still apply. Accepted students lacking this background often need to complete additional coursework, potentially extending the standard seven-year degree timeline.

The department exclusively accepts PhD applicants. Your application must clearly state the PhD as your intended degree. Students entering without an MA must first fulfill MA requirements (including coursework and thesis) at Berkeley before advancing to doctoral studies. Those holding an MA degree may apply directly to the PhD program, subject to evaluation after their first year to determine continuation eligibility.
