At Berkeley, graduate studies in chemical and biomolecular engineering focus on pioneering research in cutting-edge applied science. Students can work toward a PhD in Chemical Engineering or opt for the Product Development track to earn an MS degree. While structured coursework establishes essential scientific foundations and broadens intellectual horizons, the core of Berkeley's graduate education lies in contributing to groundbreaking discoveries. Faculty and graduate students work together as collaborators in scholarship, learning, and exploration.
The PhD program aims to expand students' expertise while cultivating their ability for innovative, original work in chemical and biomolecular engineering. Advanced coursework ensures comprehensive knowledge and professional development. The program prioritizes hands-on research, where students engage in intensive projects under faculty guidance to nurture their creative potential.
PhD candidates have the option to pursue a designated emphasis (DE), allowing specialization in interdisciplinary fields relevant to multiple doctoral programs. Available emphases include Nanoscale Science and Engineering (NSE), Energy Sciences and Technology (DEEST), Communication, Computation and Statistics, Computational and Genomic Biology, and New Media.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are: bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution; satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
