The Division of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology (BBS) faculty specialize in cutting-edge research on cellular metabolite chemistry, enzyme catalysis, and the architecture and roles of biological macromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids. Their work extends to studying complex cellular structures such as transcription machinery, DNA replication proteins, biological membranes, and regulatory mechanisms governing chromosomal organization, protein transport, and cell signaling. Investigations span diverse organisms from bacteria and bacteriophages to yeast and human cells, including their viruses. Division members collaborate across interdisciplinary programs in structural biology, chemical biology, microbiology, and toxicology. Research infrastructure encompasses protein sequencing equipment, peptide and oligonucleotide synthesis capabilities, access to Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's synchrotron for crystallography studies, and NMR spectrometry resources.
