The Department of Astronomy provides a doctoral program focused on earning a PhD in astrophysics. While applicants aren't required to have an astronomy major, prior exposure to the subject is beneficial. A solid foundation in physics is absolutely necessary.

The PhD curriculum heavily emphasizes research, with the department providing diverse study areas such as theoretical and observational astrophysics, various astronomy wavelengths (infrared, optical, radio), galactic structure and stellar dynamics, high-energy astrophysics and cosmology, as well as planetary and stellar formation.

The standard duration for completing the PhD program is set at six years. This normative timeframe represents the expected period for fulfilling all degree requirements, presuming the student begins without academic gaps, maintains continuous full-time enrollment, and demonstrates satisfactory progress toward graduation.
