The Department of History of Art provides a combined master's and doctoral program (MA/PhD) structured in two phases, designed to prepare students for academic positions, scholarly writing, and specialized museum roles. While the program doesn't accept applicants seeking only an MA degree, students can earn one after completing the initial PhD requirements. Through coursework, seminars, and independent research collaborations with faculty, students cultivate original thinking and comprehensive expertise in art history and its analytical approaches. The program actively promotes interdisciplinary studies, drawing on Berkeley's renowned departments in humanities, social sciences, and gender studies. Students can establish formal interdisciplinary connections through Designated Emphases programs in areas like film studies, folklore, gender and sexuality studies, and critical theory.
