Brown University's doctoral program in Art and Architectural History provides specialized education in art history, architectural studies, and the broader field of visual and material culture. Our alumni have secured roles in museums and universities across the globe. Faculty members supervise diverse dissertation projects spanning various historical periods, geographical regions, artistic mediums, and research approaches. The department collaborates with multiple academic units including Modern Culture and Media, History, English, Italian Studies, as well as research centers like the Pembroke Center, Cogut Humanities Institute, Joukowsky Archaeology Institute, and maintains connections with RISD. The initial phase of the PhD program focuses on coursework, language proficiency, and completing a qualifying paper. By their third year, students typically undertake comprehensive exams before developing their dissertation proposal. Subsequent years are dedicated to conducting original research and composing a dissertation with publishable potential as either a monograph or journal articles.
Graduates of non-U.S. colleges and universities who have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree may apply for admission to the Brown University Graduate School.
