This program is designed for students seeking advanced education beyond a bachelor's degree, enabling them to expand their knowledge base and gain research experience. It's not suitable for those already committed to pursuing a PhD right after graduation, who should instead apply directly to PhD programs at Berkeley or other institutions during their final undergraduate year. Participants in the Five-Year BA/MS or BS/MS program retain the flexibility to later pursue PhD studies either at Berkeley or other universities, though admission remains highly competitive alongside all PhD applicants.
The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary graduate-level education, mandating a minimum of 8 units from non-EECS departments. Graduates will develop into influential figures within their technical and professional domains.
The program prioritizes cross-disciplinary learning and additional exposure to related technical areas like physics, materials science, statistics, and biology, as well as professional fields including technology management, business, law, and public policy.
Accepted students must commence the graduate component in the term immediately following their bachelor's degree completion.
To be considered for admission to UC Berkeley, international applicants must:
finish secondary school and
earn a certificate of completion, which allows admission to a university in their home country or country of graduation
The university requires further study, either completion of the two-year A-level program with a minimum of three academic exams, the IB diploma program, or another similar academic curriculum.
