The Media Studies program combines insights from liberal arts, social sciences, and humanities, providing an interdisciplinary approach to examine media's crucial impact on economic, social, political, and cultural spheres. It blends methodologies from communication, history, anthropology, sociology, and political science with critical theories to explore media's significance in contemporary society. With a focus on historical and theoretical perspectives, the program investigates media systems, institutions, technologies, regulations, and practices. Students gain analytical skills to study diverse media forms—from traditional to digital platforms, local to global contexts, and textual to visual expressions—including television, film, and social media. The major features three specialization tracks: Digital Studies, Global Cultural Studies, or Media Law and Policy.

To be considered for admission to UC Berkeley, international applicants must:
finish secondary school and
earn a certificate of completion, which allows admission to a university in their home country or country of graduation
The university requires further study, either completion of the two-year A-level program with a minimum of three academic exams, the IB diploma program, or another similar academic curriculum.
For (IBT) minimum score of 80 or better, Paper-based test (completed prior to Oct. 2017): Minimum score of 550 or better, Revised paper-delivered test (completed Oct. 2017 or later): Minimum score of 60 or better, (IELTS) Accepted with a 6.5 or better band score (academic modules)
