The ocean is fundamental to Earth's physical, biological, chemical, and geological systems. Marine science explores the complex relationships among the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere. Key research areas with significant societal impact include: how oceans influence climate change, their involvement in climate patterns like El Niño and La Niña (and their impacts on contemporary marine life), past climate and ocean events documented in seabed sediments and coral formations, shoreline pollution's consequences for coastal ecosystems, and both natural and anthropogenic coastal erosion.
