Literature serves as a cultural space where we examine the present, uncover the past, and imagine the future. In today's interconnected world, where blogs, legal texts, political statements, manuscripts, digital publications, and images continuously influence human perspectives, textual analysis becomes indispensable.
A comparative literature degree equips students with skills to critically assess texts, write, edit, translate, and think beyond academic and geographic borders. Students explore diverse literary movements and eras, ranging from Latin American visual poetry to avant-garde Yiddish narratives. Our program delivers intensive study in key specialties of our globally renowned faculty: French, German, Italian, Hebrew studies, classical texts, critical theory, East Asian arts, performance studies, cinema and media, poetic forms, gender studies, postcolonial thought, English and American literature, Renaissance scholarship, and Slavic cultural traditions.
Every faculty member is committed to student growth and welcomes you as a vital member of Berkeley's Comparative Literature community. We nurture your creative and intellectual potential through personalized mentorship. As a student, you'll conduct in-depth literary research, collaborate on group projects, debate political and cultural topics, and cultivate sophisticated cross-cultural insights. Small class sizes ensure direct interaction with leading scholars, complemented by tailored academic guidance. Undergraduates edit and publish their own comparative literature journal (CLUJ) and organize an annual research symposium. Many students enhance their studies through international programs to broaden their linguistic and cultural expertise.
