The UC Berkeley Department of Art Practice features a bachelor's program in studio arts that combines foundational skill development with structured creative exploration. Our program delivers both technical and conceptual instruction, fostering analytical thinking across diverse mediums such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture (working with wood, metal, ceramics, and mixed materials), photography, installation, performance art, video, animation, audio, plus emerging digital fields like coding, interactive media, game development, and augmented/virtual reality. Art majors complement their studio requirements with coursework in Art History and Theory.
Students in Art Practice demonstrate profound dedication to their artistic practice, showing exceptional commitment to their work while excelling in conceptual, technical, and critical creative inquiry. They gain hands-on exposure to arts professionals and exhibition venues through artist talks, curator meetings, and visits to galleries and museums. Graduates leave prepared to make meaningful contributions to art and culture, with career paths including professional artistry, design, education, or roles in museums, galleries, arts administration, publishing, and artist collectives.
