The Department of East Asian Studies provides two distinct Master's degree options: specialized Area Master's degrees and broader General Master's degrees. The Area Master's programs concentrate on either China or Japan, primarily preparing students for doctoral research (while still serving as terminal degrees if desired). These programs typically involve thesis writing, except for linguistics students who may opt for an examination. The General Master's programs allow focus on China, Japan, or both regions, with students choosing between a thesis or departmental paper. This track is ideal for those not pursuing doctoral studies.
At the University of Arizona, multiple schools including the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC), Eller College of Management, School of Journalism, and School of Government and Public Policy collaborate to develop future global leaders equipped with advanced intercultural skills for today's interconnected world.
Professional M.A. students work closely with their Faculty Mentor and the Director of Graduate Studies (plus additional faculty as needed) to design customized Study Plans tailored to their specific objectives. Below is an example Study Plan for Marketing Emphasis. Should required courses be unavailable during planned semesters, or if alternative classes better align with a student's academic and career aspirations, the Director of Graduate Studies may approve adjustments to this suggested curriculum on an individual basis.
