The Department of East Asian Studies provides two Master's degree options: specialized Area Master's degrees and broader General Master's degrees. Area Master's programs concentrate on either China or Japan, primarily preparing students for doctoral programs (though they can also serve as final degrees). These typically involve thesis work, except for linguistics students who may opt for an exam. General Master's degrees allow focus on China, Japan, or both regions, with the choice between a thesis or departmental paper. This track is ideal for students not pursuing doctoral studies.
The University of Arizona's SILLC, Eller College of Management, School of Journalism, and School of Government and Public Policy collectively prioritize developing future global leaders equipped with advanced intercultural skills for today's interconnected economy.
Professional M.A. students, guided by their Faculty Mentor and Director of Graduate Studies (with additional faculty input when needed), can customize their Plan of Study to align with personal interests and career objectives. Below is an example Plan of Study for Management Information Systems. If required courses aren't available during your planned schedule, or if alternative courses better match your academic and professional aspirations, the Director of Graduate Studies may approve adjustments to this suggested framework on an individual basis.
