The Master of Education in Secondary Education Humanizing & Culturally Affirming Teacher (HCAT) Program is a two-year professional alternative certification pathway where participants grow as educators, fulfill certification criteria, and obtain a graduate degree while working full-time in middle or high school classrooms. Grounded in equity literacy principles, the program employs context-specific teaching approaches to foster educators' understanding of their specific school environments and student populations.
Program participants, referred to as teaching interns, secure positions as full-time instructors in Southern Arizona secondary schools. While teaching under an Alternative Teaching Certificate, they refine their instructional skills while receiving a regular salary. These interns benefit from comprehensive support through university-assigned coaches, mentors, and on-site guidance from school-based mentors.
Over the two-year duration, teaching interns complete a blend of online and in-person coursework while engaging in dynamic teacher preparation seminars. The 38-credit curriculum covers essential topics including equity-focused education, English Language Learner instructional strategies (fulfilling state SEI mandates), secondary teaching practicum, and practical classroom management techniques for working educators.
