The Applied Intercultural Arts Research (AIAR) program stands as the pioneering Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (GIDP) jointly developed with the UA College of Fine Arts. This initiative equips graduates with specialized training to undertake intercultural arts research and explore how artistic knowledge can be utilized across various fields to tackle humanistic, social, and scientific challenges impacting both local communities and our global society.
AIAR fosters conversations among interdisciplinary scholars whose primary or secondary research focuses on music, dance, theater, film, visual arts, or other cultural artistic expressions. With its practical orientation, the program encourages students to envision artistic applications within and beyond academia to improve individual, societal, and environmental welfare. The intercultural dimension educates students in employing arts-based research methods that respect cultural diversity while integrating multiple cultural viewpoints. Rooted in ethnomusicology's interdisciplinary principles, the AIAR core curriculum highlights the value of intercultural, ethnographic, and arts-based research methodologies, preparing students for community-engaged and collaborative interdisciplinary research environments.
AIAR's mission is to provide arts-focused students with the tools for rewarding careers in either interdisciplinary academic research or practical applications within public sector roles.
