The Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (GIDP) in Statistics provides multidisciplinary academic paths culminating in Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees, available through either the standard Statistics track or the Statistical Informatics specialization. Additionally, it offers a 12-unit Graduate Certificate option and a Ph.D. minor for doctoral candidates enrolled in non-Statistics programs at the University of Arizona. Our objective is to cultivate future data science professionals equipped to tackle contemporary challenges in interdisciplinary data collection, processing, and analysis.
Certificate candidates frequently come from non-traditional academic backgrounds, typically with significant professional experience following their undergraduate studies. Applicants have included professionals from technology sectors (particularly Raytheon Missile Systems), research personnel handling data-driven scientific work seeking advanced statistical training, and mathematics/statistics educators pursuing career transitions. Given this wide-ranging professional diversity, admission evaluations extend beyond academic records to assess relevant work experience. The Certificate program offers both online and in-person completion options.

Qualification Requirements

For admission to the Graduate Certificate Program in Statistics, applicants must have or be in the process of completing a Baccalaureate Degree, either in a mathematical field or a field that makes significant use of quantitative methods, with at least a 3.0 overall grade point average (GPA). A previous degree in Statistics or Biostatistics is useful, but not required.
All students entering the Program are required to have a substantive background in mathematics, including at least three semesters of Calculus through multivariable/vector calculus (at the level of MATH 125, MATH 129, MATH 223), one semester of Linear Algebra (at the level of MATH 215), and experience with computer technologies.
The certificate program does not required standardized tests.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 79 iBT (or 60 on the revised PBT with no section score lower than 15). Individual MyBest scores must also be dated within 2 years of the enrollment term to be considered valid.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - minimum composite score of 7, with no subject area below a 6
